And away we go! This is the very first Hustle Hawaii blog.
What’s going on everybody? My name is J. Kaleo, aka Jason Genegabus. I work at the daily newspaper here in Honolulu and I teach at a local community college.
I’m also an entrepreneur. I’ve got my hands in a couple of different things at the moment, and the Hustle Hawaii concept is one I’ve been working on even before COVID-19.
Let me tell you a little bit of a story. Back in March, when everybody was getting sick and everything was starting to go sideways — not everybody was getting sick, but things were closing up and everybody was hunkering down.
So I sat at home and realized I could see the writing on the wall. Soon after, I ended up getting furloughed at work and it was all downhill from there.
I watched as people were getting let go from from their jobs and thought, “well, I need to figure out what my next hustle is going to be.”
In my family, where I’m from, how I was raised… hustling is a good thing. Hustling is important. Hustling is what moves you ahead, it’s what gets you to that next rung in that ladder that we call life.
Right? So I’m sitting there, and thinking what can I do? One of the ideas I had was this grand plan to talk to a bunch of people and get their ideas on what they would do if they lost everything due to COVID.
I wanted to kind of tie that together and put it out there. So I interviewed a few people. But then I kind of lost steam because people wouldn’t get back to me, people said no… and I started doubting myself a little bit.
And then, on top of it all, I had other things crop up that started to become a little more important, so to speak. So that idea got put on the backburner and here we are.
So it’s now 2021, and I’ve got more than a few irons in the fire. I’m actually on my way out to talk to some potential clients for a side gig while preparing this post. I’m doing some consulting work as just one of the new hustles I’ve come up with to cover my own personal economic shortfall that’s been exacerbated by COVID-19.
And that’s kind of what this blog is going to be about. What are you doing, or what is the person that you see on the internet, or on Facebook, or on Instagram — what are they doing? What is that hustle that they’re up to that’s putting them ahead, or that’s making them stand out? What is making you sit up and take notice of how this person is hustling?
Hopefully I’ll get a few interesting folks to interview and pick their brains about their hustles and what motivates them. And if you wanted to, how you could get started with that same hustle?
So this is the first test for me to try out different technology and see how things work, because if this goes the way I want, the way I hope and pray, lots and lots and lots of you will be checking out this blog.
All that said, thank you for being here. Thank you for hopefully sticking along for the ride. And to tell you a little bit more about myself, my journey where I’m from, I’ll be sharing more in the posts to come — but I’ve got some other fun things to talk about as well, and hopefully some fun people to talk to.
That’s all coming up on new Hustle Hawaii blog. Welcome to the journey. Make sure you go out there and #findyourhustle. And if you already have one, let me know how you’re working to #hustlesmarter in 2021. Aloha.
